Islanders keep 2014 1st rounder, send Sabres 2015 pick

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The Thomas Vanek trade from last fall is finally complete, with the New York Islanders deciding to keep this year’s first round pick, sending Buffalo its 2015 first round selection instead.

The Islanders had the choice, as part of the trade that shipped Vanek to New York. This year’s selection will be the 5th overall pick, although the 2015 draft is generally regarded as more talent-rich in the first round.

Sabres GM Tim Murray will have plenty of ammunition next year, with Buffalo now holding three first-round picks in the 2015 draft: their own, the Islanders’ selection, as well as the St. Louis Blues’ first round pick from the Ryan Miller/Steve Ott trade. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
