NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (AP) — A 20-year-old woman remains jailed after police say she stole merchandise from a New York department store, assaulted a security guard and then crashed her BMW into another vehicle while trying to flee.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that police in New Hartford say Valentina Kovalets of Utica stole clothing from a mall store Tuesday and got into her BMW. When security employees tried to stop her, police say she slammed her door on the arm of one of the workers and sped away.

Officers say soon afterward she collided with a sport utility vehicle, injuring the 19-year-old woman driving it.

Kovalets was charged with robbery, reckless endangerment, assault and vehicle and traffic violations. She’s being held Thursday in the Oneida County Jail on $10,000 bail.

It couldn’t be determined if she has a lawyer.
