Gala will support teachers impacted by Catholic school closings

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – People in the community are coming together to help the teachers who lost their jobs because of the Catholic school closings.

The Hats Off Gala is Thursday night at the Statler. The event raises money for the Catholic Teachers Fund.

Theresa Roma set up the fund. Roma attended Catholic school for 14 years during her childhood. She hopes one day her twins will also receive a Catholic education. She was heartbroken to learn 10 schools will be closing at the end of the year.

Roma hopes to raise enough money to give each displaced teacher $500.

“I still speak to a lot of these teachers. They’re a big part of my life and they shaped me into who I am today so I want the opportunity to give back to them,” she explained in March. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
