WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) – An East Amherst doctor has been arrested on charges of health care fraud and submitting false statements relating to health care matters.

Federal prosecutors say for four years, Dr. Sreekrishna Cheruvu submitted false claims to private insurance companies for services that were never provided, including individual therapy sessions when it was a group therapy setting that the doctor was not even present for. Authorities say Cheruvu was so brazen he even submitted claims for services he provided when he was actually out of the country.

A November 2013 raid at the doctor’s Williamsville office uncovered multiple instances of fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and Cheruvu allegedly bilked HealthNow, Independent Health and Excellus out of around $775,000.

Cheruvu made an initial appearance in federal court and is currently being detained. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
