FORT BRAGG, N.C. (WIVB) — The Army is investigating the death of a paratrooper from western New York. Military officials sent News 4 details Sunday night about local decorated Army Sgt. Shaina Schmigel.
Schmigel was an intelligence analyst from Medina and was killed Friday during a paratrooper training exercise at Fort Bragg. A public Facebook page has been set up in her honor, friends are asking you to “like” it to remember the American Hero.
She was reportedly found unresponsive after a night jump. A family friend told the online publication, “Orleans Hub” Schmigel graduated from Medina High School in 2010 and joined the Army after graduation. She served in Iraq in 2011.
Schmigel was a decorated soldier, earning several awards in her time serving in the Army. Her commander, Lieutenant Colonel Albert Paquin, issued a statement saying their thoughts and prayers were with the friends and family in this time of loss.
Sgt. Schmigel received several military honors and awards including the Global War of Terrorism Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and Parachutist Badge.
Army officials say the cause of death is under investigation.
