Alden schools take precautions after bear sighting

ALDEN, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Alden Central School District is taking precautions this week following a black bear sighting in the town over the weekend.

Interim Superintendent Adam Stoltman tells News 4 the playground at Alden Middle School will be off limits to students during school hours this week.

The district will also keep students from eating lunch outside for the next few days. A walking field trip scheduled for Monday to the Alden Historical Society on Broadway did go on, but the district provided transportation for students.

Stoltman stresses the district is taking these steps strictly as a precaution. He says he spoke with an official with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation this morning and was assured that there have been no bear sightings since Saturday.

A News 4 viewer from Alden sent a Report!t picture to the newsroom over the weekend showing a black bear feeding on a bird feeder in her backyard. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
