BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Buffalo’s getting ready to host thousands of athletes from across the state as the Special Olympics kick off this weekend.

Local police officers carried the games’ torch through Amherst, Tonawanda and Buffalo on Thursday. The games start Friday, and you can get involved.

Organizers are looking for volunteers to help out at the 5k Foam Fest Saturday in Batavia. Pre-registration is now closed, but organizers say walk-in volunteers are welcome.

The opening ceremony will be held Friday night at 8 p.m. on UB’s North Campus in Amherst.
