Deputies: Pair plotted to collect insurance money from car fire

SHERMAN, N.Y. (WIVB) – A man and woman from the southern tier are accused of intentionally torching a car for the insurance money.

Firefighters had to extinguish the car fire on February 21 in Sherman. A week later, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office received a tip the fire was intentionally set.

Investigaters have determined that 46-year-old Terri Seekings of Sherman co-owned the vehicle and had 27-year-old Kenneth Brightman of Sherman set it on fire to collect the insurance money. Both were arrested Friday and charged with third degree arson and fourth degree conspiracy.

Brightman remains in jail in lieu of bail. Seekings posted bail and was released on her own recognizance. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
