Sgt. killed in training accident to be laid to rest

BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Final arrangements are now in place for a Western New York soldier who lost her life during a military training exercise near Fort Bragg, N.C.

Calling hours for Sergeant Shaina Schmigel will be held Tuesday at the Michael Tomaszeweski Funeral Home on West Main Street in Batavia. Friends and family can pay their respects from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. that day.

A funeral service will follow on Wednesday at the funeral home. It begins at 11 a.m. and will then continue to Evergreen Cemetery on Clinton Street Road in Batavia.

Sgt. Schmigel died during a training exercise involving a parachute. She was 21-years-old.
