Mayor recognized for cleaning up brownfields

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Leaders have worked hard to clean up brownfield areas around Buffalo, and Monday they were recognized for the effort.

The non-profit group New Partners for Community Revitalization presented Mayor Byron Brown with an Outstanding Achievement Award for the transformation of the South Buffalo Brownfield Opportunity Area. Leaders say the Queen City is becoming a model for cleaning up these sites.

Executive Director Jody Kass said, “Many communities that are struggling with changes in our economy. Where for example the auto industry in Detroit and Cleveland. The area wide approach that’s happening here in Buffalo is a model that’s actually being replicated elsewhere.”

Mayor Brown said the program is making a big difference, and that he’s working to be sure it’s reauthorized by the state. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
