Sweet Home senior invited to White House Q & A

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Sweet Home High School senior is in Washington, D.C. Monday night, hopeful that she will be speaking to President Barack Obama about college affordability on Tuesday.

Becky Jasen submitted a question online for the first-ever Q & A session with the President, to be streamed live on Tumblr.com Tuesday afternoon. Jasen was invited to Washington to attend the event at the White House. She won’t know until she gets to the session whether she will be selected to ask her question of the President.

And what would this 18 year old ask the nation’s chief executive? Jasen told News 4’s Jacquie Walker by phone Monday night: “I am valedictorian of my class. I am student body president of my class. And I volunteer at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. And yet, when I graduate from college, I’m going to end up with at least $60,000 of debt. What more do you want a high school student to do to be able to afford college?”

President Obama announced expansion of a program today to help students manage their current debt load. Jasen would like to see measures that will help students who have not yet entered college and are not yet burdened by debt.

Jasen says financial considerations outweighed almost all other factors when she and her fellow students were selecting their colleges. She will be attending RIT studying to become a physician’s assistant.

The Tumblr.com Q & A session with the President will begin Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
