Woman pushing stroller struck and killed by vehicle

ANGELICA, N.Y. (WIVB) – A woman was walking her 2-year-old granddaughter in a stroller Tuesday evening in Angelica, when a vehicle struck and killed her.

New York State Police say 53-year-old Cynthia L. Polanowski was walking with her granddaughter in a stroller Tuesday evening, as well as Robyn White of Angelica and White’s dog. The group was crossing a traffic circle on Park Circle when police say 50-year-old Shayne Ellsessor’s struck them with his vehicle.

“It’s not a good situation. There’s a lot of trauma and a lot of people very, very upset for good reason,” said resident Jim Gallman.

Polanowski was taken to St. James Hospital with head trauma, where she later died from her injuries. Her granddaughter and White both sustained minor injuries. The dog died at the scene of the crash.

Police are investigating the crash and say Ellsessor showed no signs of impairment, intoxication or cell phone use. He did not sustain any injuries. Witnesses say Polanowski pushed the stroller out of the way, just before she was hit.

“She pushed the baby carriage with her granddaughter in it out of harms way,” said Gallman.

Troopers tell News 4 they believe this was a terrible accident.
