AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) – Whole Foods Markets is coming to the Northtown Plaza on Sheridan Drive in Amherst.

Town Supervisor Dr. Barry Weinstein says the company plans to buy the plaza and demolish the old Bon-Ton building to make room for a new 50,000-square foot grocery store. The town board must first approve the purchase of the property, though it was revealed in May that Whole Foods has signed a lease for the new location.

WS Developers, the team planning on building the new store, hopes to get approval by the board and close on the property by 2015. It will take six- to nine-months to demolish and prepare the site, and another six months to build the store. Whole Foods would likely open in the first quarter of 2016.

WS Developers currently operates 17 Whole Foods across the country. The grocery store features natural and organic foods.

Since opening in 1980, the grocery chain has 379 stores, nationwide.
