BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Juneteenth festival organizers and participants will kick off their weekend Thursday night at Em Tea Coffee Cup Cafe. For Sankofa Day, there will be a poetic revolution to honor African American literary legends Amiri Baraka and Maya Angelou.

The tribute is leading up to the parade and celebration in Martin Luther King Jr. Park this weekend. Organizers say “Sankofa” means that it is not taboo to go back and fetch what we may have forgotten, or to build on the past.

Juneteenth focuses on appreciating African and African American heritage, tradition and progress. Learn more about it by watching a segment from Winging It! Buffalo Style.

The cafe is located at 80 Oakgrove, in Buffalo.
