SARDINIA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Erie County Sheriff’s deputies say they had to use a Taser on a drunk driver overnight.

Azariah Schwartz was stopped on Olean Road in the Town of Sardinia at 12:15 a.m. Friday. Authorities say the 29-year-old was swerving into oncoming traffic when a deputy pulled him over.

After interviews and field sobriety tests, the Chaffee man was determined to be intoxicated. Officials say Schwartz was belligerent and confrontational, and despite being told to step back several times, continued to confront deputies in a hostile manner. At that point, deputies deployed a Taser to take Schwartz into custody.

He is charged with DWI, resisting arrest, obstruction, disorderly conduct and several traffic violations.

Schwartz was taken to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital for evaluation before being taken to the Erie County Holding Center. His vehicle was towed from the scene. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
