BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Buffalo city leaders want you to consider parking your car in favor of public transportation.

Mayor Byron Brown issued a proclamation Monday marking this Thursday “Dump the Pump” day. It’s part of a national effort to support using mass transit.

Leaders say you can save money by taking the bus or rail, and help the enviornment.

NFTA Executive Director Kimberely Minkel said, “Last year alone with our 26 million rides that we provided, we reduce carbon dioxide emissions here in Buffalo by half a billion pounds.”

This is the ninth year for Dump the Pump. To encourage riders, the NFTA will offer up a discount card and free USA Today newspaper on Thursday to morning riders.
