County employee accused of stealing county property

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – An Erie County employee was arrested Wednesday after a several-month long investigation into the theft of county property.

Deputies stopped Randy Rettig, 57, and placed him under arrested for driving while under the influence of drugs as well as several vehicle and traffic violations. The Erie County Sheriff’s Office says inside Rettig’s vehicle, they found county property and cocaine.

Rettig, a senior computer program with the county’s Department of Information and Support Services, is charged with petit larceny, possession of stolen property and criminal procession of a controlled substance.

Erie County Mark Poloncarz has placed Rettig on administrative leave pending a full investigation. He is currently being held in the Erie County Holding Center pending arraignment.

The sheriff’s office says their investigation is ongoing and further charges against Rettig are possible.
