NFTA encourages WNYers to ‘Dump the Pump’

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Leaders are challenging you to take public transportation on Thursday.

Thursday is the 9th annual National Dump the Pump Day. It might take you longer, but NFTA leaders say the wait is worth it.

“A two-person household can save on average more than $10,000 a year by taking transit,” said NFTA Executive Director Kim Minkel.

The environment will also thank you. Last year alone, 26 million NFTA rides reduced CO2 emissions “by half a billion pounds. That’s right – half a billion pounds,” said Minkel.

Every full rail car equals 125 fewer cars on the streets. NFTA leaders say it’s also safer than a car and healthier.

Minkel said, “Most people walk six minutes a day. Transit riders walk 19 minutes a day.”

The CDC recommends you walk at least 22 minutes every day.

NFTA officials will be handing out free papers as some incentive to support public transportation, a $57 billion industry that employs more than 400,000 people. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
