BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Bass Pro Shops will open in Western New York after all, but not in the Buffalo market.

The outdoor retailer plans to open a 145,000-square foot Outdoor World store in the Rochester suburb of Victor, at the intersection of the New York State Thruway and State Route 96, in 2016.

The Victor store will be the company’s third location in New York State, but the first large-format store in the Empire State.

The average customer stays two-and-a-half hours at a Bass Pro Shop and drives about 50 miles to get there, according to the retailer. The Victor location will feature “Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill,” a nautical-themed center in the store featuring family fun and dining.

After a nearly decade-long courtship, plans for a Bass Pro on Buffalo’s waterfront fell through in 2010. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
