Two men accused of starting fire at Buffalo business

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Two Buffalo man are accused of using Molotov cocktails to damage a business on Ontario Street.

On June 13, authorities say Ryan Smolinski, 26, and Lowell Carey, 53, threw two Molotov cocktails inside WNY Property Contractors, starting a fire that caused $5,000 in damages.

Police say surveillance video shows one of the men lighting and placing a bottle underneath a garage door, and the other throwing a lit bottle on top of the roof of the building.

Smolinski and Carey are both charged with maliciously damaging or destroying, or attempting to damage or destroy, by means of fire or an explosive, any building used in interstate commerce, unlawful possession of an unregistered firearm, and conspiracy to commit any offense against the United States.

After an initial appearance in court on Friday, Smolinski was released until his next court date, while Carey is being held pending a detention hearing.
