13 people displaced after apartment fire

BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB)- A fire broke out in a second story Batavia apartment around 10:30 p.m. Friday night.

The blaze started in an apartment housing a man and his three young grandchildren. It then spread to five more apartments on North Spruce Street.

A neighbor called the fire department after hearing popping noises. She opened her door to find smoke in the hallway. When crews arrived there were flames shooting out of a second story window.

All occupants were able to make it out safely but the Red Cross is now assisting 13 people who are displaced.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
