Council to discuss possible suit against school district

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Members of the Buffalo Common Council’s Education Committee want the city attorney to look into a possible lawsuit, against the Buffalo School District and the State Education Department.

The suit would claim the chronic number of failing schools within the city is a breach of state and federal law, and constitutes a denial of every student to a sound basic education. The Common Council will discuss the resolution Tuesday.

The school district had good news to report Monday. The Buffalo School District is reporting an eight point increase in its graduation rates.

In 2012 the graduation rate was 47.8 percent. Buffalo Schools is reporting that in 2013 that number jumped to 56 percent.
