BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – News 4 Sports honors the young men and women who excel both on the athletic field and in the classroom.

There have been a male and female Scholar Athlete each month over the last eight months, and Tuesday News 4 invited those 16 winners to our 22nd annual luncheon where two were selected as Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Hamburg’s Jeremiah Bill and Barker’s Olivia Denny, both of whom plan to attend the University of Rochester, were selected as this year’s winners.

Both were the Scholar Athlete winners last November. Bill is a team captain in football and basketball with a 95 average. Denny is a four-year varsity player in three sports, with a 100.7 in the classroom.

“Being able to play football for four years at the varsity level with my athletic director and my coach, Coach Cauley. It was a pleasure, him being my coach, he’s taught me so much along the way – to be a great leader, to be humble to your teammates and be humble to your community,” Bill said.

Denny said, “For field hockey, I went to the state championships three out of my four years on varsity. We never won it, but we did make it to the semifinals every year. My senior year, we went to double overtime. So that last game of my senior year was really special for me.”

Each of the winners receive a $1,500 scholarship along with their award.
