Falling tree kills two people in Ontario County

PHELPS, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say two people have been killed after a tree fell on their car during severe thunderstorms in western New York.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office says a man and a woman were traveling on a rural road in the town of Phelps around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when a tree fell over, crushing their car.

Officials say both victims were in their 20s and were traveling in a car with out-of-state license plates. Their names haven’t been released.

Powerful thunderstorms were passing through the region at the time, knocking out power to several thousand homes and businesses in neighboring Ontario and Monroe counties.

The National Weather Service has issued flash flood watches Wednesday for areas of upstate New York stretching from the Buffalo area to the Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks.
