Bookkeeper admits embezzling nearly $2 million

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A Western New York bookkeeper has pleaded guilty to embezzling nearly $2 million from the medical practice where she worked.

Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita says 53-year-old Suzanne Glawatz stole more than $1.8 million over a seven-year period by pocketing cash from co-pays and having her employer write loan checks for her, which she falsely claimed to pay back.

Prosecutors say she spent the money on a Mercedes Benz, family vacations and law school for her child.

Glawatz, who is from Lancaster, pleaded guilty Thursday to grand larceny and tax fraud. She faces up to 32 years in prison when she’s sentenced in September.

Her employer, Dr. Marcelle Grassi, was not in her office Thursday, according to her staff, and didn’t immediately comment. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
