BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Falling glass damaged a car that was parked outside the Avant Building, causing thousands of dollars in damage.
Lou Bordonaro’s wife frequently tells him stories of glass falling from the Avant Building where she works. On Tuesday one of those stories turned scary when her car was hit causing thousands of dollars in damage. Meanwhile, a spokesperson with the building says this is an isolated incident.
“Usually I shrug it off because it sounds like crazy talk,” said Bordonaro. But this time, he couldn’t just shrug off.
“I got a text from my wife saying that a window fell from the building and landed on her car.”
Her car was scratched by the glass, and an auto repair shop says all the car’s windows will have to be replaced.
“It’s not like you’d see in a movie where something takes the car out. It’s just a lot of abrasions all over,” said Bordonaro.
Those abrasions add up to over $5,200 in damage. Bordonaro said this isn’t the first time his wife has complained about falling glass at the Avant Building.
“Not weekly or anything, but probably every few months. Maybe two to 10 times a year,” said Bordonaro.
News 4 reached out to a spokesperson with the Avant Building. They says this is the first time glass has fallen and hit a car. However, it’s not the first time glass has fallen off of the building. They tell me it’s somewhat expected during maintenance, at which point they tape off the area and cover landscaping with a tarp as a safety precaution.
“Happening once seems pretty often to me,” said Bordonaro.
He talked to the building manager and said he’s not worried about them footing the bill, he’s just worried about it happening again.
“They’re a good corporate citizen, they seem to be. They do a lot of development; they do a lot around town. I don’t want to kick dirt on them because I believe it’s an honest mistake and all that. It’s just what if the next time, maintenance or not maintenance, what if it’s not a car, it’s a baby?” said Bordonaro.
The spokesperson with Avant says me there are 4,500 pieces of glass on the building that opened in 2009. She stressed that the majority of time, glass seen on the property is from maintenance work. They are looking into the recent incident.
News 4 also reached out to the city to see if they’ve received any complaints about glass falling from the Avant Building and they are not aware of any others. A city inspector will be on hand to make sure everything is sound.
