Man accused of faking marriage to become U.S. citizen

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) – A citizen of Azerbaijian who tried to become a U.S. citizen through a false marriage was sentenced Thursday to five-and-a-half months behind bars.

Adil Alakbarov had been living in Cheektowaga and went to great lengths to try to convince an immigration officer his marriage was valid. But the marriage was a sham, and Alakbarov didn’t even live with his purported wife.

When he learned he was going to be charged, Alakbarov fled to Mexico. He was arrested as he attempted to board a plane bound for Turkey.

Alakbarov was convicted of making a false statement on an immigration document. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
