BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A World Cup watch party is being held at Canalside for the match up between United States and Germany.
Sunday’s watch party was so successful, Canalside decided they had to hold another watch party Thursday when the US takes on Germany.
Empire State Development’s Sam Hoyt said fans can expect, “an electric environment, being surrounded by hundreds, maybe thousands, of fellow USA supporters who are all fired up like I am. I work my jersey to work today. They can expect a great time.”
“Last Sunday we have an event down here, where we weren’t certain how many people were going to come. Five thousand people came, we apologize for the long lines, we didn’t expect that many. We’ll be ready this time. We’ve got food trucks, we’ve got Ted’s Hot Dogs coming back to the waterfront today and maybe long into the future to serve their product,” explained Hoyt.
The fans came out in droves Sunday, with more than 5,000 showing up to watch the Americans take on Portugal. With two large screens set up to view the game, people were invited to bring along their lawn chairs and stop at food trucks along the water.
The most common theme among those fans was showing pride for their country.
Fan Marco Maronski said, “You don’t even have to be a soccer fan to enjoy it, you just have to be a fan of the United States and everyone comes together as a nation and we all cheer the same team on and it’s awesome because it’s just such good camaraderie.”
Soccer player and fan Elise Williams said, “Just watching the game with everyone, it’s kind of like an inspiration to watch the US team play.”
Portugal tied the game late Sunday, making Thursday night’s matchup that much more important for the US.
