Attica town supervisor dies at age 44

ATTICA, N.Y. (WIVB) – The town supervisor of Attica died Thursday night, according to the town clerk.

Michael Smart, 44, was taken to a hospital in Batavia on Thursday with an apparent blood clot in his lung, and died in the evening, according to Kristen Mell, Attica Town Clerk.

Smart had been hurt in a motorcycle crash on June 1, but according to Mell he had been walking since the crash, in which he suffered injuries to his chest and arm.

Smart was elected to the post in November 2013 and had been on the job just short of six months.

Funeral arrangements are pending. For now the supervisor duties will be handled by Howard Barraclough, who serves on the Town Council.
