Lawmakers present care packages to Blue Star Mothers

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Local lawmakers are showing support for our servicemen and women by presenting care packages to the Blue Star Mothers.

Those packages will go to servicemembers at remote bases around the world, to let them know they are not forgotten on Independence Day.

Gail Sfeir, President of the local chapter of Blue Star Mothers, said, “The reason I got involved in this chapter in 2010 is support. My son was just deployed to Afghanistan and I met those wonderful women (in the group) and we developed a bond that has been continuing for the last four years. As we say in our Blue Star Mothers group, if you have one child in the military, they are all our children. So I thank you for all our children.”

State Senator George Maziarz, Assemblywoman Jane Corwin and Congressman Chris Collins have helped collect donations all month.

Local stores, including Dash’s, Tops and Budwey’s, have also helped stock about 60 care packages. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
