Cats, dogs die in blaze at Sunset Bay

SUNSET BAY, N.Y. (WIVB) – Several dogs and cats were killed in a blaze in Chautauqua County.

Multiple fire departments were called to a house on Allegany Road in Irving just after 8 p.m. on Monday. The homeowners were not there when the fire started, but several cats and dogs died in the flames.

Sunset Bay firefighters worked with five or six other departments to stop it from spreading.

Sunset Bay Fire Chief Rob Weiskerger said, “It was a really good knock down, a great combined effort. It is outside the public water supply system so we did utilize multiple agencies for tankers. I would say the bulk of the fire was knocked down in 15- to 20-minutes.”

The fire chief said the heat and humidity made this tough to fight, and they were lucky to stop it when they did.
