WNY donates 40,000 pounds of food to program

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The numbers are in from the Fill the Backpack program.

The two-week food drive was a big success. Western New Yorkers donated just over 40,000 pounds of food at local Wegmans stores to the Food Bank of Western New York.

Come next school year, all of this food will go home each Friday with children in need, to make sure they have nutritious food over the weekend.

News 4 and the CW23 teamed up with Wegmans and the Food Bank for the first time this year. Sixteen schools are enrolled in the Fill the Backpack program right now, with many more on the waiting list.
