BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A man who sexually abused a 6-year-old boy while babysitting him pleaded guilty Wednesday.
Jury selection was set to begin in the trial of 60-year-old Donald Bridges when he pleaded guilty as charged to first degree criminal sexual act and sexual abuse, as well as endangering the welfare of a child. Bridges admitted he orally sodomized and sexually abused the boy.
The Erie County District Attorney’s Office says Bridges also threatened the child with a knife, threatening to hurt him should the boy reveal the abuse. The boy eventually told his first grade teacher and school counselor what happened.
The boy and his mother left the Buffalo area in April 2013 to avoid harassment from Bridges and his family, according to prosecutors. Detectives worked tirelessly to track them down through three different states before locating them in May 2014. Once contacted, both were fully cooperative, which the DA said dashed any hope Bridges had of escaping justice.
“Because of the dedication and dogged determination of the investigators and prosecutors assigned to this case, an odious pedophile has been prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Sedita said.
Bridges is currently in custody and faces a maximum of 25 years in prison when he is sentenced August 4.
