ELMA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Deputies say a license plate left at the scene of a hit-and-run crash led them to the suspect’s home.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office was called to Rice Road in Elma around 1:45 a.m. on Thursday. One driver had already fled the scene before deputies arrived, but left a license plate behind.

Deputies used the license plate and arrived at John Wilczewski’s home within minutes after the accident. Officers say the 40-year-old failed field sobriety tests and his BAC was .16 percent, twice the legal limit.

Wilczewski is charged with DWI.
