Hours-long standoff ends tragically

Police said several hour standoff ended early Friday morning.

EDEN, N.Y. (WIVB) – A tense standoff at a home in Eden came to a tragic end early Friday morning when a man inside took his own life.

The standoff on Maple Avenue took place for several hours, from late Thursday night and into early Friday morning.

A man was inside the home with a gun, and though some neighbors believe the incident began when the man shot his dog, that did not happen. Officials said the man was depressed and may have had other mental health issues.

A SWAT team, State Police and Erie County Sheriff’s deputies swarmed the home Friday and found the man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police are not releasing any more information at this time.
