Victim’s father speaks after alleged ‘Fantasy Island’ sex assault

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) – News 4 spoke to the father of an 8-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted at Martin’s Fantasy Island on Grand Island.

We have been trying to speak to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office regarding the June 22 incident and subsequent arrested of Barry Hollis, but deputies have declined our request.

While investigating the story, News 4 found the victim’s father. We are not naming him as to not reveal his daughter’s identity.

He said, “I wouldn’t wish this on anybody. That was one of my biggest fears when I had kids, was this kind of thing, and it’s like a nightmare’s come true.”

Deputies say Hollis, a.k.a. Michael Nofear, planned his visit from Niagara Falls to Grand Island, two weeks prior to coming to Fantasy Island towards the end of June. Investigators say the 36-year-old visited other parks in the area before this alleged incident.

“Obviously it was premeditated. He planned on coming to that park and he planned on doing something when the time was right,” the father said.

The father says his daughter fell victim to Hollis while riding the Crazy Mouse roller coaster. He says his daughter was sitting next to Hollis in the horseshoe shaped car.

“On the ride, he offered a purple teddy bear to my daughter and her friend. They both said no they did not want it,” the father said.

But then, the man says, Hollis attacked his daughter.

“They’re just very patient people. They wait for the perfect time to do what they’re going to do and hope the victims aren’t going to say anything,” the father said.

But this case was different. The alleged victim spoke up.

“She said ‘ow,’ because she wanted him to stop. It went on for about a minute-and-a-half, over the whole ride,” the father reported.

While the 8-year-old girl was on the ride, her father says he was just a couple hundred yards away, waiting for it to end. Once she got off the ride, he says, that’s when the day took an ugly turn.

“My daughter kept an eye on [Hollis] from the ride, to where I was sitting and told me immediately there was a pedophile on the ride,” the father said.

Hollis, the man says, was able to get out of the park. Sheriff’s deputies were able to track him down, thanks to his daughter’s vigilance.

He is charged with first degree felony sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. He is currently being held in the Erie County Holding Center.

“[My daughter] wanted me to make sure kids, more than anything, not even adults, kids should know that it’s okay to come forward if someone does something they don’t like,” the father said.

Hollis is due in Grand Island Town Court on Tuesday afternoon. The girl’s family says, they’ll be there, too.

“I just wanted to make it clear that my kids were not unattended,” the father said. “This can happen to anybody’s kid, at anytime. It’s just a matter of your kid coming forward immediately with what happened to them.”
