83-year-old woman accused of murdering husband

TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Town of Tonawanda Police have arrested an elderly woman on charges she murdered her husband.

This is the home on Hawthorne, where the alleged murder took place.

A woman living next door says she heard a woman speaking gibberish in a loud voice before the man was killed, but had no idea what happened when she saw police around her home the next morning.

Police say 83-year-old Phyllis Eson hit her 89-year-old husband Norman with a blunt object, killing him. It happened Sunday night in the upper apartment of a home on Hawthorne.

She was arrested Monday and is currently undergoing a psychiatric evaluation before she’s arraigned next week. Police say she was confused when she opened the door and police saw blood on her clothing. Her husband had been dead for several hours.

Capt. Joseph Carosi said, “It’s not altogether common. We don’t see this a lot, but it does occur. We arrested the suspect based on the evidence; we’ve consulted with the District Attorney’s Office and they’re all fully aware of what’s going on.”

Neighbor Karen Mardis is still in shock.

“I’m still anxious about the whole thing. This happened right next to my house when I was sleeping; it scared me.”

Town of Tonawanda Police Department Public Information Officer Captain Joseph F. Carosi said, “When the officers got there, they knocked on the door. Phyllis answered with blood on her, they asked her some questions, she seemed confused.”

A landlord originally made the call to police to check on the Eson’s home.

Eson is charged with second-degree murder and will be back in court Monday at 4 p.m.
