United outsourcing to affect 71 jobs locally

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) United Airlines is planning to outsource at least 630 jobs at U.S. airports within the coming months, including dozens of jobs at the Buffalo International Airport.

The New York State Department of Labor reports Tues day that the move should affect 71 workers locally. The affected positions are ticket and gate agents as well as baggage handlers, who could lose their jobs by October 1.

A dozen airports will be affected by the move including Charlotte, North Carolina; Pensacola, Florida; Detroit and Des Moines, Iowa.

The company will eliminate the jobs from the United Airlines payroll and hire other companies to provide the services at a lower cost.

United Continental has taken a number of cost-cutting moves, including closing its hub at the Cleveland airport.
