Vigil honors 29-year-old victim of domestic violence

BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) – A community came together in Batavia Thursday night to remembering a woman whose life was tragically cut short last month in Westfield.

A vigil was held for 29-year-old Nicole Sheehan at the YWCA. The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office says Sheehan’s boyfriend shot her in the head before turning the gun on himself. She died a short time later.

Thursday night’s vigil was meant to honor Sheehan while raising awareness about domestic violence.

Batavia YWCA Executive Director Jeanne Walton said, “People often deny the problem exists. Victims themselves, to family members and everyone else, and it’s an opportunity for us to bring it into people’s awareness and remind them this is something that can happen to anybody.”
