Lawn mower inspection rumor swirls through Facebook

MAYVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Facebook post about lawn mower registrations angered residents in Chautauqua County, but the county clerk said Friday the post is a hoax.

The post claims lawn mowers will need to be inspected annually beginning in August 2015. The post looks official with a photo of a fake lawn mower inspection sticker. The post says the $10 inspection can be performed at any automotive service station. It also includes detailed criteria for the inspection.

County Clerk Larry Barmore said, “We had people contacting our office upset about this ‘new law’ and I can understand after seeing the post how some could believe it may be true, but as of yet, nothing like this is being considered.”

“Let’s just hope this spoof didn’t give anyone any ideas,” he added. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
