Man allegedly filed false report, stalked ex-girlfriend

New York State Police

COLDEN, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Colden man was arrested for stalking Monday night, after allegedly filing a false report against his ex-girlfriend, claiming she was driving drunk and had struck a mailbox.

Authorities were called by 22-year-old Richard Cerrone Monday night. He reported an accident had occurred and deputies set off to search for the scene. But while on their way, the sheriff’s office was called by State Police, who told them Cerrone’s ex-girlfriend was in their barracks to file a complaint against him.

Deputies went to Cerrone’s home in Colden after verifying the phone number used by the person who reported the accident had called authorities. Cerrone initially denied reporting the accident, but later claimed he forgot about making the call, according to deputies.

He provided a voluntary written statement about the accident, and deputies warned him that filing a false report is a class A misdemeanor. As deputies prepared to drive Cerrone to the scene of the alleged accident, they say he admitted that he was lying.

The sheriff’s office charged Cerrone with filing a false written report and falsely reporting an incident.

Meanwhile, at the State Police barracks, Cerrone’s ex-girlfriend informed troopers that he had followed her all day on Monday, and had been stalking her for the past three months.

Troopers charged Cerrone with fourth degree stalking.
