PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WIVB) – Bills GM Doug Whaley covered a variety of topics Monday morning, in an interview with News 4 Sports Director Steve Vesey.
Part of the conversation revolved around Marcell Dareus, who failed a conditioning test when he reported to camp, despite multiple off-the-field incidents in the offseason.
“It’s a little disappointing, him coming in out of shape,” said Whaley. “But, we feel he’ll be back sooner rather than later. Minor setback, but talking to him, I think his mind’s right, he’s focused on the season. And he told me personally, he’s ready to take over the league.”
Dareus was excused from practice today, dealing with personal issues.
Whaley also discussed EJ Manuel, and the potential for him to take a step forward this season.
“For us, realistic expectation is for him to get the ball to the playmakers,” said Whaley. “We’ve surrounded him with enough playmakers, that if he just does his job, we should be ok.”
“Crawl before you walk. Now, five years from now, hopefully we’ll be talking about, it’s EJ’s team, we’re going to throw it 50 times a game,” said Whaley. “Now, let’s hand it off, make the right decisions, and don’t lose the game for us.”
