More jail time for man who escaped prison, kayaked to Canada

FLEMINGTON, N.J. (WIVB) – A man who escaped from a Pennsylvania prison before stealing a car, driving to Lewiston, and kayaking into Canada is now facing additional jail time.

In September 2012, Steven Pieczynski escaped from a prison in Bucks County before stealing a vehicle, driving to Lewiston and kayaking across the Lower Niagara River. He was later arrested by Border Patrol in Toronto at the home of a woman he met online along with a reputed member of a Colombian drug cartel.

Now the New Jersey man is facing additional jail time for stealing from his neighbors after Tropical Storm Irene.

Authorities have said Pieczynski was friends with his neighbors on Facebook. He broke into their home after noting they would be traveling.

The Associated Press reports the 39-year-old will spend five years behind bars on burglary and theft charges, which will run consecutively to a four-year term he received for bail jumping. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
