Major natural gas leak on Vulcan Street

TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) – There was a major natural gas leak near the Town of Tonawanda and Buffalo border Thursday morning, according to Town of Tonawanda Police.

Vulcan Street was closed to all traffic between Kenmore Avenue and Tonawanda Street. The road is now back open. Buildings in the area were evacuated around 10:15 a.m. People were able to get back inside the buildings around 10:40 a.m.

Police say a construction crew ruptured the gas line, resulting in the leak. A National Fuel spokesperson says the gas service was promptly turned off and the situation made safe.

National Fuel says contractors and residents should make sure they know what is below a surface before digging. They can call 811, and the area in question will be marked for utility lines prior to renovation and/or construction.
