BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – An inmate is facing additional charges after a deputy was injured while trying to subdue him at the Erie County Holding Center.

The sheriff’s office says Ivan Melendez was seen tearing out the light from his cell and electrical wires, as well as smearing human excrement in his cell.

Deputies were going to move him to a new cell, but in the process, authorities say Melendez attacked, resulting in one deputy being cut on the arm. That deputy was taken to the Erie County Medical Center.

Melendez was taken to an isolation cell and remains on 24-hour watch. The sheriff’s office says this is the second cell he has damaged. He previously caused $2,000 to a cell by destroying the bunk and other cell components.

He is now facing additional charges.
