Child almost hit by BB gun shots fired at soup kitchen line

BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Authorities want to know why someone fired a BB gun at people standing outside a church while waiting in line for a daily soup kitchen.

It happened around lunchtime Tuesday, as families with children were waiting outside Batavia Assembly of God. A 3-year-old girl was almost hit as she sat in her stroller. The girl’s father says one of the BBs came within a couple of inches of his daughter’s head.

One woman said she heard at least two shots, and then noticed BBs on the ground and a hole in the side of the church.

Witnesses believe the shots came from an apartment complex across the street. According to police, it does appear the shots came from that general direction.

Valerie White said, “Somebody noticed that it was a BB that was coming at us. And then when we looked down on the ground, there’s the BB on the ground and there’s a hole in the building. With all of us adults and these kids, one just missed our daughter.”

Batavia Police are unsure what type of weapon was used in the shooting. Officers canvassed the apartment complex.

The shooters face reckless endangerment and criminal mischief charges, if they are caught.
