Law would help families caring for disabled loved one

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) – Western New York families who have a disabled loved one could be getting some extra help from the federal government.

Senator Charles Schumer was in Williamsville Monday to push for the passage of the Achieving a Better Life Experience, or “ABLE,” Act. The law would create tax-advantaged savings accounts that would be used to help families save money for medical care, education, housing, and transportation.

“Tthe bottom line: families shouldn’t have to choose between paying for daily life and saving for their child’s future,” Schumer said.

The Bill was passed by the House Ways and Means Committee and now goes to the Senate.

Schumer says he hopes it’ll pass this year. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
