BROCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) – A former high school hockey star, who murdered his girlfriend in her dorm room at SUNY Brockport, will spend the next 25 years to life in prison.
A judge in Rochester gave 22-year-old Clayton Whittemore the maximum sentence on Tuesday.
Whittemore claims “he snapped” when he beat 18-year-old Alexandra Kogut to death with a curling iron in her dorm room in 2012.
During the three-week trial, the defense didn’t dispute that Whittemore killed Kogut. Attorney Mark Curley said his client lost control of himself because he was in the throes of an extreme emotional disturbance and had asked jurors to convict on a charge of first-degree manslaughter, which carries a lesser penalty.
The jury ultimately convicted Whittemore, who was a student at Utica College, of second degree murder.
