Arnold bows out of campaign, acknowledges affair

LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) – Gia Arnold is bowing out of the New York Senate race for the seat currently held by George Maziarz.

Arnold was set to face off with North Tonawanda Mayor Robert Ortt in a Republican primary this September.

The Orleans County resident and mother of three cited personal decisions, including an extramarital affair, as the ultimate reason for her to end her election campaign.

“It was an excuse for an escape from an already declining marriage,” Arnold said. “I cannot regret the decisions I have made, but I can admit to being happier presently than before.”

The decision to pullout leaves Ortt as the sole Republican candidate for the 62nd Senate District seat. He’ll face endorsed Democrat and Niagara Falls attorney Johnney Destino in the November general election.

Ortt released a statement Wednesday, saying, in part, “Anyone who has ever been involved in politics knows the importance of putting family first. I respect Ms. Arnold’s decision to focus on her family at this time and wish them all the best.”
