BRANT, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Buffalo man authorities say was trying to import a large quantity of untaxed cigarettes from North Carolina has been arrested.

After several weeks of investigation, the NYS Cigarette Task Force arrested 43-year-old Hamid Thompson and charged him with possessing and transporting untaxed cigarettes, fourth degree criminal tax fraud and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Thompson was arrested on the Thruway Thursday morning in Brant as he returned from North Carolina. After obtaining a search warrant for his car, authorities say they found 200 cartons of untaxed Newport cigarettes secreted in duffel bags in the trunk.

In addition, Thompson was allegedly found to be in possession of an ID in the name of Hamid Sylvester. A check of this ID revealed an arrest warrant from the State of Virginia concerning untaxed cigarettes.

Thompson is being held at the Erie County Holding Center pending arraignment.
